Funding-Contingent Faculty Layoff Guidance

The following is guidance for completing the layoff process for a represented funding-contingent faculty member in Career and Limited Duration (Pro Tem, Visting, Postdoc, Postbacc, and Retired) positions. Units may not provide layoff notice without first receiving approval through this process. Please address any questions regarding this process to uoelr@uoregon.edu.

Note: This process does not apply to non-funding-contingent Career Faculty. That process can be found on the Career Faculty Layoff Guidance page.

Process Overview

  1. Unit submits funding-contingent layoff request for review;
  2. Layoff request reviewed by VPRI (or equivalent) and ELR, the unit is then informed of the review decision;
  3. Unit informs impacted faculty member of the decision to lay them off verbally or in-person and issues layoff notice letter to them and to HR Operations.

Process Steps

Sep 1. Funding-contingent faculty layoff approval request

To obtain approval for a funding-contingent career faculty layoff, units need to submit a completed copy of the Funding-Contingent Career Faculty Layoff Notice template to uoelr@uoregon.edu and vpri@uoregon.edu (or equivalent for non-research funding-contingent faculty), requesting approval for the layoff. The completed template requires units to specify the CBA allowable rationale for the layoff and specify the appropriate notice period.

Funding-contingent faculty members who have achieved promotion shall receive at least 30 days notice before being laid off. Funding-contingent faculty members who have not achieved promotion are not subject to notice before being laid off (however, 30 days notice is encouraged whenever possible).

Layoffs for performance reasons must also include indication that the performance improvement progression has been followed.

Step 2. Layoff request reviewed and unit informed of decision

After submission the layoff will be reviewed by VPRI (or equivalent) and ELR, and the unit will be informed of the approval decision. Units may not provide layoff notice (verbal or written) without first receiving approval for the layoff.

Step 3. Unit issues layoff notice letter

After receiving approval, units must provide layoff notice to the impacted faculty member of the layoff decision verbally or in-person and are also required to provide them a layoff notice using the Funding-Contingent Career Faculty Layoff Notice template. A copy of the notice letter should be sent to the impacted faculty member’s UO email address and to hrops@uoregon.edu, which will be used to generate a layoff PRF.

Additional Considerations

Limited Duration positions that are expiring in accordance with their terms do not require layoff or non-renewal notice.
