Post Retirement Appointments

Tenure Reduction Appointments

Appointments for TRP are set up by submitting a PRF to Human Resources. A unique position number will be assigned by HR.  The Tenure Reduction Program Letter of Agreement serves as the employment contract.

Other Post Retirement Faculty Appointments

A unique position number will be assigned by HR: RXXXXX

  • Use a Request to Offer (RTO) to begin or renew a post retirement appointment. You can use their old position number as the placeholder on the RTO.
    • On the RTO use contract type D for nonfunding contingent and E for funding contingent, and faculty type RTR. The initial post-retirement appointment is considered a "Post retirement position begins appointment", use Post retirement renewal if appropriate.
    • In the contract comments use CLASSIFICATION: Retired
    • In the internal comments - if this is the first post-retirement position in your department, input 'initial post retirement appointment'.
  • Post-retirement appointments can be made at any appropriate salary rate. The rate is not necessarily tied to past pay.
  • The monthly basis (9 or 12) does not normally change upon retirement if in the same job. An employee who is on a 9-month basis before retirement will usually stay on a 9-month basis post-retirement.
  • Summer appointments (June 16-September 15) can be set up using just a PRF.

Temporary unclassified appointments for UO retirees ($3,000 or less for six weeks or less) should use position number BUOWTA and require only a PRF.

Unclassified post-retirement employees do not accrue sick leave or vacation hours.  Post-retirement appointments for UO retirees do not require Affirmative Action review if the work assignment is similar to the employee’s pre-retirement work.

Post Retirement OA Appointments

A unique position number will be assigned by HR: RXXXXX.

  • To appoint an OA in the same or similar post retirement position, submit to HR a PRF (leave the position number blank) and attach a copy of the appointment terms provided to the retiree (length of appointment, appointment percent).
  • Officer of Administration retirement positions never carry academic rank. OA retirees who held academic rank prior to retirement will be appointed with no rank in retirement.
  • Post-retirement appointments can be made at any appropriate salary rate. The rate is not necessarily tied to past pay.
  • The post-retirement appointment can also be appointed hourly if this employee will be used on an 'as needed' basis.
  • If the position is different than their pre-retirement work, contact talent@uoregon.edu

Post-retirement appointments for UO retirees do not require Affirmative Action review if the work assignment is similar to the employee’s pre-retirement work.

Stipends

Retirees are not normally allowed stipends. This is due to the need to track hours to comply with retirement plan regulations. All employment should be reflected in FTE.

Non University of Oregon Retirees

Appointments for employees who have retired from other institutions or jurisdictions, whether PERS or not, are handled the same as non-retiree appointments, same OPE, etc.  The payroll office must be notified if a hire is a PERS retiree in order to stop contributions as appropriate.
