There are a number of different contract types actively assigned to university employees. The list below differentiates the contracts from one another providing important information about each:
Non-Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments (Primarily Officers of Instruction)
B Contract: The contract type used for faculty in tenure-related positions
Length: This contract is issued for a period of three years unless the faculty member agree on a shorter duration.
Timely Notice: If an appointment of a full-time, tenure-track bargaining unit member is not to be renewed for reasons other than for just cause or program elimination or reduction, notice of nonrenewal shall be given per the CBA or Policy. Acting Assistant Professor appointments do not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.
Timely Notice: Faculty members in tenure-track positions who are given timely notice will be switched to contract type BTRM for their final appointment (Faculty Type B20 and regular position number).
D Contract: The contract type used for the appointment faculty member into a non-funding contingent, pro tem, visiting, retiree or post doc appointments.
Length: Duration of appointment is at the discretion of the University and is not to exceed 1 year without approval from the President.
Timely Notice: This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal. .
C* Contract: The contract type used for the appointment of a faculty member into a career appointment.
CO Contract: The contract type used for career instructional appointments in years one through four of an appointment.
CT Contract: The contract type used for career appointments in years five+ of an appointment.
C3 Contract: The contract type used for career appointments at the level of Senior I or Senior II.
Non-Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments - Librarians
CL* Contract: The contract type used for the appointment of a career librarian appointment.
Length: This contract can be issued for:
- Two years at a time during the first six years of appointment or until of employment in rank, or until appointment at the rank of Associate Librarian, whichever is later, and
- Three years at a time at the rank of Associate Librarian and Senior Librarian.
CL1 Contract: The contract type used for career librarian appointments at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
CL2 Contract: The contract type used for career librarian appointments at the rank of Associate or Senior Librarian
Length: This contract can be issued for two years at a time. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice: Career appointments are eligible for timely notice after three years of service at FTE ≥ .50 (with the exception of those on funding contingent contracts).
CL3 Contract: The contract type used for non-bargaining unit, career librarian appointments at the rank of Associate Librarian and Senior Librarian.
Length: This contract can be issued for three years at a time.
Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments (Primarily Officers of Research)
E Contract: The contract type used for the appointment of a faculty member into an pro tem or a postdoctoral scholar, visiting, or retiree appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding.
- E contracts are used primarily for researchers but may also be used for the rare funding contingent officer of instruction appointment for a bargaining unit member.
Length: Duration of appointment is at the discretion of the University. Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §8. This contract type is not usually issued for more than one year at a time.
Timely Notice: This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal. Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.
C4 Contract: The contract type used for the appointment of a bargaining unit faculty member into a career appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding.
Length: This contract can be issued for up to one year.
Timely Notice: The University will provide notice of renewal, nonrenewal, or termination for lack of funding as soon as practicable, unless promoted and then there is a 30 day minimum notice period.
