COVID-19: Unrepresented Faculty Leave Options

This summary represents the intersecting policies, collective bargaining agreements and federal and state leave laws that apply to UO employees. Nothing about this information changes or modifies an employee's leave rights. The following scenarios help you navigate leave options during the university’s COVID-19 response. In the scenarios related to an employee’s own illness or illness of a dependent/family member, accrued sick leave must be taken before other types of leave.

Off work due to personal illness other than COVID-19.

  • Sick leave
  • Vacation Leave
  • Leave without pay – with approval from leadership that is generally granted based on operational need
  • FMLA/OFLA – based on qualifications and eligibility requirements

Off work due to your own:

  • Seeking or awaiting results of a COVID-19 test due to symptoms or exposure; OR
    This does not include weekly testing of unvaccinated employees as required by UO.
  • COVID-19 diagnosis; OR
  • medical provider, public health authority, UO case management team, or school directed quarantine or isolation.

Off work due to obtaining immunization related to COVID-19:

  • Attending a COVID-19 vaccination appointment during scheduled UO work time will be considered paid time. Appointments that are scheduled during non-work time will not. More information is available on the UO's Coronavirus Vaccine webpage.

Off work due to recovering from any injury, disability, illness, or condition related to obtaining immunization for COVID-19:

  • Flexible work arrangement - needs based approval, if asymptomatic
  • Sick leave
  • UO COVID-19 Leave
  • Leave without pay - with approval from leadership that is generally granted based on operational need
  • FMLA/OFLA - based on qualifications and eligibility requirements
  • Exception process - administered through University Human Resources

Off work to care for a dependent/family member with a personal illness including a COVID-19 diagnosis.

  • Flexible work arrangement – consult supervisor, department head, or program director for unit guidance
  • Sick leave
  • Vacation Leave
  • UO COVID-19 Leave (dependent must live in the employee's home and care must be related to COVID-19 exposure, illness, or diagnosis)
  • Leave without pay – with approval from leadership that is generally granted based on operational need
  • FMLA/OFLA – based on qualifications and eligibility requirements

Off work to care for a child or dependent due to the closure of a school or child care facility based on a COVID-19 response.

  • Flexible work arrangement – consult supervisor, department head, or program director for unit guidance
  • Sick leave
  • Vacation Leave
  • Leave without pay – with approval from leadership that is generally granted based on operational need
  • FMLA/OFLA – based on qualifications and eligibility requirements

Requesting to stay home based on a general concern or personal desire.

  • Flexible work arrangement – consult supervisor, department head, or program director for unit guidance
  • Vacation Leave
  • Leave without pay – with approval from leadership that is generally granted based on operational need
