Training for Supervisors

Supervisors at the University of Oregon are responsible for managing and directing the activities of their team, ensuring that work is carried out effectively and goals are met. Supervisors need strong leadership and communication skills so that they can set goals, provide guidance, assess performance, and cultivate a cohesive and positive work environment.  They should also develop knowledge of policies and procedures impacting employment, understanding topics such as employee leaves, workplace accommodations, and corrective discipline.  The following training opportunities are recommended for all supervisors.

Training Description

Emerging Supervisors Series

The Emerging Supervisors Series is designed to teach leadership principles and supervisory practices to new and emerging supervisors. You will focus on recognizing your strengths and skills, motivating and inspiring others, giving feedback, and fostering a culture of trust and accountability. You will learn best practices for hiring processes and explore your role in supporting legislation that guides HR practices.

Supervisor Development Series (custom training option for departments)

This supervisor training program is based on curriculum from the Emerging Supervisors Series and is intended to help departments develop new and emerging supervisors. You will focus on recognizing your strengths and skills, motivating and inspiring others, giving feedback, and fostering a culture of trust and accountability. You will learn best practices for hiring processes and explore your role in supporting legislation that guides HR practices.

Training Description

Grievances, Discipline and Unions - Supervisor Essentials

[Synchronous online training]

Whether you are an experienced supervisor or new to the role, it is important to effectively manage in a unionized environment. The University has five different unions representing employees from faculty to custodians to police. In this training you will learn about discipline, investigating misconduct, and grievances in the union context. We will walk through the potential pitfalls of running afoul of the collective bargaining agreement, how and when you can talk directly to your employees, who to contact for help and when, and how to effectively apply discipline.

Performance Management - Supervisor Development

As a supervisor it is important to provide employees with consistent, quality feedback throughout the year, not just at their performance evaluation. In this workshop participants will learn a variety of performance management tools to provide both the positive and critical feedback employees need to grow and develop.

This workshop will focus on the preparation and completion of performance evaluations for Officers of Administration and Classified staff. We will highlight the practical consideration and mistakes to avoid, how to get an evaluations started, the importance of identifying concerning patterns in performance, how to frame feedback both verbally and in writing and strategies for providing feedback virtually.

ADA Fundamentals for Supervisors

Whether you are an experienced supervisor or new to the role, it is important to stay current on the institution’s legal obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. In this training you will learn about and receive practical guidance on how to handle disability-related issues that you may encounter as a supervisor including requests for workplace accommodations, discrimination on the basis of perceived disability, and workplace accessibility.

This e-learning course covers policies and procedures surrounding student employment at the University of Oregon. In addition to reviewing the policies, it outlines best-practices for their application and walks supervisors through real-life scenarios they might encounter with student employment in their departments.

This workshop will provide practical information, resources and tools on policies, laws and effective procedures and practices for hiring, supervising and supporting the performance and development of student employees. It will cover the differences between supervising students and supervising other staff, including the relevance of facilitating students’ professional development. This workshop will also provide concrete recommendations for effective job description drafting, recruiting, hiring, scheduling, orienting, training, evaluating, and coaching students to operate as effective members of your staff and to prepare them intentionally for the world of work.
