The 2008 Supervision Course for Potential Supervisors

This course is specifically designed for those employees, including officers of administration, classified staff, or faculty, who are interesting in becoming supervisors.  This includes those employees who currently supervise only student employees.

Anyone wishing to take the 2008 Supervision Course for Potential Supervisors course should register for the entire course, and needs to attend the entire first session on Wednesday, April 9th .  Any session that is missed, after the first session, can be made up during the next year’s course delivery.

Session 1:  Roles of a Supervisor and Your Supervisory Style
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008, 10:00 a.m. – noon and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Bean West Conference Room
This session will introduce the roles of a supervisor at UO; discuss responsibilities, challenges, and skills needed to fulfill these roles; and, review Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) information as it relates to supervision.

Session 2:  Preventing Discrimination and Creating a Welcoming Environment
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Bean West Conference Room
This session will introduce the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor in preventing, identifying and intervening with discrimination; explore supervisors' roles in creating a welcoming environment and the knowledge and skills needed to do this effectively.

Session 3:  Introduction to Job Descriptions and Hiring
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Bean West Conference Room
This session will introduce the supervisor's responsibilities for correctly identifying the major job duties of any position, review the major steps of a hiring process, and discuss the knowledge and skills necessary to carry through an effective hiring process.

Session 4:  Supervisor's Roles in Effective Communication and Employee Development
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Bean West Conference Room
This session will review basic communication skills, discuss the importance of feedback in employee development, and review the use of performance appraisal.

Session 5:  Supervisor's Roles in Discipline and Other Areas of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Bean West Conference Room
This session will review the basic issues covered in the collective bargaining agreement; discuss progressive discipline and the work supervisors need to do during this process; and, explore the relationship between the university and the union, and the role the supervisor plays in this relationship.

Session 6:  Overall Self-Assessment and Where You Can Go From Here
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Bean East Conference Room
During this session, participants will complete an overall self-assessment for their own use.  Speakers will discuss how current behavior on the job can affect your chances of becoming a supervisor, review the process for applying for a supervisory position, and explore ways to continue your career development.
