Holidays for Classified Employees
Under the SEIU collective bargaining agreement, SEIU-represented classified employees have December 24 and 25 off as holidays in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and January 1 in recognition of New Year’s Day. Please see the holiday schedule for classified employees to confirm which days the designated holidays are being observed during the calendar year: Current Holiday Schedule.
In addition, the SEIU collective bargaining agreement grants classified employees an additional day off, referred to as the special day of leave (Article 42, section 2), which may be used the working day before or next working day after the Christmas or New Year's Day holidays. Full-time employees receive 8 hours of leave, prorated for part-time based upon the same percentage or fraction of month, as they are normally scheduled to work. Temporary employees are not eligible for holiday pay but do earn time-and-a-half for work performed on a recognized holiday.
Under the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, employees are entitled to have December 25 and January 1 off as holidays. Teamsters represented employees may also take a special day of leave, which may be used the workday before or next work day after the Christmas or New Year's Day holidays.
Holidays for Officers of Administration, Instruction and Research (with 12 month contracts) [Unclassified Employees]
These employees have December 25 off in observance of Christmas Day, and January 1 in recognition of New Year’s Day. Nine-month faculty not entitled to accrue vacation are deemed to be on paid leave for the period between December 25 and January 1. If the Governor continues the tradition of granting a special day of leave, the university will honor the special day of leave for unclassified employees. While traditionally the special day of leave is taken the working day before or next working day after either Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, it may be taken any working day between November 25 and January 31. This announcement is usually made by mid-November each year.
Because classified employees have Christmas Eve off, the university’s workforce will be significantly reduced on this day. To address operational needs on Christmas Eve, units managers may use one of the following three options:
1) close if all employees have elected to use their leave, or
2) remain fully open to the public, or
3) designate the day as an “administrative closure,” on which employees may choose to work, but offices are closed to the public. If units close because all unit employees have elected to use leave, OAs and other unclassified staff will either need to use paid leave (such as vacation or the “special day” described above) or unpaid leave for Christmas Eve.
Campus Operations will collect and publish a list of those units that will remain open to the public on Christmas Eve. Heating systems will not be affected in buildings where units are open or opt for the “administrative closure.”
