December Holidays

            Monday, December 26, 2011
            Monday, January 2, 2012

December Holidays for Classified Employees
The SEIU-OUS collective bargaining agreement grants both December 24 and 25 as paid holidays classified employees.  When Christmas Day falls on a Sunday (as it does this year), the contract stipulates specifically the work days classified employees have off in observance of these two holidays.  The December 24th holiday will be observed on Friday, December 23rd, 2011 and Christmas Day will be observed on Monday December 26th, 2011.  The applicable SEIU contract language follows:

Article 42 Section 5. Observance

“(A) (1)  When a holiday specified in Section 1 of this Article falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday shall be recognized as the holiday.  When a holiday specified in Section 1 of this Article falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be recognized as the holiday.

(2) With the addition of Christmas Eve Day as a holiday…, paragraph (A) (1) of this section results in Christmas Day and Christmas Eve Day being recognized on the same day when Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Christmas Eve Day falls on a Sunday. To ensure that employees receive the benefits of both holidays, the parties agree that when Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Christmas Eve Day falls on a Sunday, the preceding Friday will be recognized as Christmas Eve Day and the following Monday will be recognized as Christmas Day.”

Classified employees will also receive January 2 off in observance of New Year’s Day.

In addition to the holidays described above, full-time classified employees receive eight hours of leave, called the “special day of leave,” which is prorated for part-time staff. This day may be used on the day before or day after Christmas or New Year's Day holidays. The university will be open most of those days, and time off should be scheduled to maintain departmental services.  SEIU and Teamsters’ employees receive this day under the terms of their collective bargaining agreements.  Temporary employees do not receive this day of paid leave.

Holidays for Unclassified Employees
For unclassified employees, Christmas Day will be observed on December 26, 2011 and New Year’s Day on January 2, 2012. Governor Kitzhaber recently announced that he has granted the traditional special day of leave (Governor's Day) for unclassified employees (i.e., officers of administration, instruction and research), which may be used the workday before or after Christmas or New Year's Day.  In addition, unclassified employees have December 26 and January 2 off as paid holidays.
