Job Context

Information Services' (IS) Academic Services Division at the University of Oregon invites applications and nominations for the position of Web Applications Developer

Information Services is located on the main University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon which is regarded generally as one of the most attractive university sites in the nation. The UO is a comprehensive research university that serves its students and the people of Oregon, the nation, and the world through the creation and transfer of knowledge in the liberal arts, the natural and social sciences, and the professions. The UO is also the flagship institution in the Oregon University System and one of only 34 public research universities in the nation recognized through membership in the Association of American Universities, an invitation-only association of universities with especially strong research and academic programs.

Information Services is the central information technology unit for the institution, and supports systems and services in the areas of Administrative Applications, Academic Services and Network and Telecommunications Services. Information Services also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center as well as the Network Startup Resource Center. These units report to the Vice Provost for Information Services / CIO.

Academic Services promotes the innovative use of technology by supporting faculty, and students in their teaching, learning and research. We provide assistance, coordination and leadership for emerging technologies, site-licensed software, helpdesk services, classroom and technical support in open access labs and instructional labs and student project centers.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Academic Services the Web Developer will work closely with a team of Web developers, Information Services' full time and student staff and other IT professionals to successfully deliver Web projects and applications approved by the Vice Provosts' Council and/or Information Services.

Sample projects may include but are not limited to applications, services and Web 2.0+ Web sites; UO course catalog with media rich descriptions; a faculty portal, Intranets and public Web sites, and contract applications serving various constituent groups across the University. The Web Developer will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the Information Technology homepage for the university and associated web sites of the Information Services' division as well as the division guide to services and Intranet.

Primary position responsibilities include:

Web Development and programming:
*Design/adapt technologies, architect, develop, implement and maintain Web development projects including information architecture, graphic design, programming and documentation while maintaining standards defined by Information Services' management.
*Conduct needs assessment; determining programming and project requirements
*Develop, propose and implement approved Web strategy and site structures.
*Ensure that projects and applications are properly integrated into the respective portfolios for maintenance and support.
*Solicit, coordinate, edit and architect Web content, working with clients and Web development team.
*Research and develop emerging technologies in response to requests or in anticipation of department or institutional needs
*Strategize with and work collaboratively with Information Services staff to ensure that projects and applications are properly integrated into the respective portfolios for maintenance and support.
*Ensure universal access to deployed applications to extent possible
*Work with other individuals and units of the university in a cooperative manner as a member of the greater university IT community to meet articulated goals.

Web Projects Management
*Strategize with and work collaboratively with Vice Provosts' Council and Information Services staff to conduct needs assessments, prioritize, manage and implement projects successfully.
*Manage entire Web development lifecycle of approved projects, including but not limited to needs assessment, determining programming and project requirements, information architecture, development, content management, documentation, training, and maintenance.
*Manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Other position responsibilities include:

Web Projects Management

Documentation, User Training and Support
*Write and publish technical and end user documentation for all projects and work
*Provide end user training as appropriate

Supervision and Other Duties as Assigned
*Ensure business continuity in all areas of responsibility
*Ensure compliance with university and unit policies, best practices, procedures and guidelines
*Manage a Web development team consisting of 1-3 Web development professionals and/or student interns to include project coordination / work assignment, work review and recommending hiring, discharge and disciplinary action.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
*Bachelor's degree or equivalent applicable professional experience in the field of web development/programming, information architecture, graphic/user interface design, systems administration and/or database administration.
*Two years managing and developing Web projects in a professional, team-based development environment.
*Extensive demonstrable experience with Web 2.0+ technologies
*Demonstrated experience with relevant and current programming languages.
*Demonstrated ability to assess client needs, translate into programming and project requirements and deliver solution on-time and within budget.
*Demonstrated ability to manage Web and programming projects through entire development lifecycle.
*Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of diverse IT professionals, clients, partners.
*Demonstrable proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Acrobat Pro, or equivalent softwares.
*Demonstrated experience implementing a content management system
*Extensive experience with wire framing, information architecture, programming, XML, CSS, Javascript.
*Proven skills in developing applications, tools and resources for a variety of distribution methods, including but not limited to Web browsers, mobile devices, SMS, RSS, etc.
*Familiarity with a multitude of browsers, platforms, devices.
*Knowledge of Section 508 web accessibility requirements or the ability to obtain within a reasonable time period.
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills. The incumbent must be able to communicate with a wide range of users and partners, as well as with students, faculty, and staff from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
*Excellent judgment.
*Proven ability to maintain confidence when working with highly sensitive information, including what might be available on a restricted Internet site
*Ability to juggle multiple, oftentimes competing priorities.
*U.S. citizenship (or eligibility for and ability to obtain employment status under U.S. immigration laws by projected hire date).

Desirable Qualifications
*Bachelor's degree in design, English, journalism, computer science or relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
*Demonstrated experience with LAMP.
*Experience managing technical staff / Web development team.
*Experience designing curriculum and/or teaching.
*Applicants with experience serving the needs of a diverse population are strongly desired.
