The Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Oregon, is seeking applications for 2 full-time (9 month), tenure track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR positions, to begin Fall 2010. Applicants should be qualified to conduct research and/or a creative practice and teach planning and design studios as well as non-studio subject area courses related to the design and making of sustainable, beautiful landscapes. Teaching and/or professional experience is desirable; a love of learning and designing is essential. The right person for both positions will be thoughtful and personally skillful, able to teach through his/her own work as well as through classes and critiques. The successful candidates will enjoy broad environmental interests and be able to sustain a focused research and/or creative practice on significant, emerging areas within Landscape Architecture.

Candidates should be proficient at nurturing creative, integrative site analysis and design exploration and at developing skills in students, especially in studio settings. Faculty members are expected to possess strong teaching skills and engage in rigorous scholarship and/or creative practice. We seek individuals who will complement existing areas of teaching and research in the department, school and university. The department is interested in individuals who have clear ideas and experience with new landscape design and production methods that will guide the next generation of landscape architects. These may involve innovative responses to difficult challenges in creating healthier communities and environments. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop and disseminate scholarship to a broad audience.

Applicants for Position 1 will emphasize the art and craft of making sustainable and beautiful landscapes and also demonstrate potential to take a leadership role in developing and instructing courses in landscape technologies and construction. The department is interested in individuals who have clear ideas and experience with new landscape construction methods and materials that will guide the next generation of landscape architects.

Applicants for Position 2 will emphasize the design and theory of making sustainable and beautiful landscapes and also have clear ideas and experiences with the type of new skills, insights and understandings that will help guide the next generation of landscape architects.

About the Department:
The departmental faculty is intentionally interdisciplinary, and offers coursework covering a wide spectrum of landscape architectural interests and areas. We are a collegial, engaged and energetic planning and design community that values diverse viewpoints and the making of richly supportive, equitable, socially responsive, and ecologically sensitive places. Teaching projects occur throughout the state and region, including frequent projects in Portland, as well as in collaboration with other departments and universities, and with local, state, federal agencies and non-governmental organizations.

For us, Landscape Architecture is a rigorous discipline and a demanding profession broadly concerned with the planning, design, and management of landscapes at all scales. Centered on the human experience and an understanding of cultures in the context of natural systems, we strive to create landscapes that respect the land's processes and integrity, aid in the fulfillment of human potential, and aspire to art.

The Department of Landscape Architecture is located within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, which includes seven other departments and programs: Architecture; Interior Architecture; Planning, Public Policy, and Management; Art; Art History; Arts and Administration; Product Design; and Historic Preservation. The Landscape Architecture program is highly respected and has enjoyed strong administrative support. At present the Department includes approximately 90 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, 11 full-time faculty, a changing pool of adjunct and visiting faculty, and one full-time staff member. We offer an accredited BLA and MLA, a post-professional MLA, and a Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture, as well as a Minor in Landscape Architecture that attracts students from many disciplines throughout the school and university. Eugene, Oregon is located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley in a metropolitan area of approximately 235,000 people. Eugene is a one-hour drive from the Pacific Ocean, one hour from the Cascade Mountains, and two hours from Portland.

Qualifications:
1. A terminal degree in landscape architecture or a closely related field is required.
2. Demonstrated potential to engage in integrative, scholarly work and disseminate the results is required.
3. Significant professional experience in landscape planning and design is strongly desired.
4. Previous teaching experience is strongly desired.
5. Licensure and/or a Ph.D. are preferred.

Special Qualifications for Position 1:
1. Experience related to the innovative design, construction and documentation of projects at the site scale is strongly desired.
2. Expertise in sciences related to landscape function, such as engineering, hydrology, geology, geomorphology, or ecological restoration is desired.

Special Qualifications for Position 2:
1. Experience related to theories, processes and communication of sustainable landscape design is strongly desired.

2. A modest portfolio of representative products of your research and creative work, including professional projects and/or publications.

3. Examples of classes that you are qualified to teach, including information about classes that you have taught or helped to teach. Include previous course materials if available.
