Job Description:
CASLS is a National Foreign Language Resource Center supporting second language teaching and learning. It is administered through the University of Oregon, and is primarily grant-funded. The Center's staff includes 14 full-time staff, 3 part-time staff, and 25 student employees. The educational software programmers will report to assistant director and serve as core members of the creative team at CASLS by developing innovative technology-based tools for language education. Working with IT team and communicating with assessment specialists, linguists, and education professionals, the programmers will develop, test, pilot, revise, and maintain educational tools.
Essential functions:
1. Build new software systems
CASLS creates a variety of original software systems to meet requirements of the grants it is awarded. These applications are generally Web based, and focus on serving K-16 teachers, students, and administrators. Online testing, multimedia-enabled test items, e-portfolio, and data warehousing are examples of software applications CASLS produces.
*Work with IT team and CASLS staff members to create specifications for new software applications
*Create prototypes of new software interfaces
*Design and populate databases these systems rely on
*Carry out programming of new systems
*Deploy applications onto production servers
2. Maintain existing software systems
CASLS has a number of existing software systems which need updates and maintenance from time to time. Maintenance involves keeping the systems running, such as cleaning out files or old data. Updates involve adding new features, or changing the behavior of the application in some way. Existing software includes:
*LinguaFolio - a Web application for language learners written in PHP and MySQL
*CASLS pilot system - a Web application for test piloting written in Java/Struts with a Postgres database
Any new software applications created by this position will also be maintained by this position.
Minimum Qualifications:
*BA or BS
*Significant experience in PHP 5, Java 5/6, SQL, Javascript, CSS, HTML, and a modern MVC framework
*Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
Preferred Qualifications:
*Experience in Advanced MySQL/Postgres, AJAX, Linux, Struts, Hibernate, JUnit, Symfony, Microsoft .NET Framework, and Adobe Flash
*Background in educational software development and delivery
*Knowledge of software development life cycle methodologies
*Server configuration and maintenance experience
*IT project management experience
*Management and supervision experience
*Knowledge of statistics, psychometrics, and second language acquisition
