o University of Oregon Housing invites applications for full-time Cook 1. Position may be assigned to either a.m. or p.m. shift.
o This is a classified position represented by SEIU local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.
o University of Oregon positions that are at least half-time are eligible for excellent benefits, including health and dental, employer-paid retirement, and tuition benefits for employee or an eligible dependent, sick and vacation leave.
o Due to budgetary shortfalls, the person appointed to this position may be required to take unpaid furlough days between September 1, 2009 and June 30, 2011.

TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE:
... one year cooking in a commercial food service facility, OR community college or technical school certification in a Culinary Arts program.
Position also requires record keeping skills and ability to read and write English; strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures; ability to prioritize work and maintain professional demeanor in stressful and hectic situations; ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment; possession of or ability to obtain Lane County Food Handler's Card and understand Hazard Communication Training supplied by employer. Preference given to candidates with experience preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a high volume kitchen, exhibition cooking experience, and experience directing lower level staff. Must pass criminal background check.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is responsible for daily preparation of specials and entrees and other food service functions. Duties include:
... preparing food items for daily use, including daily food specials; assuring food temperatures are maintained according to established guidelines; preparing food items as ordered by patrons on display grill; providing service to customers when food items are cooked.
... preparing and stocking service items for guests, including rices, tortillas, breads; setting up and keeping salad bar stocked attractive for continual use by patrons.
... maintaining records such as worksheets, meal counts, amount cooked and left over.
... cleaning and sanitizing work areas, including cleaning grills and counters, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning walk-ins, cleaning and organizing storerooms; maintaining safety and food handling practices as set by county, state, and local authorities.
... preparing and placing food orders under direction of food service manager.
... in the absence of higher level staff, unlocking lobby doors, freezer walk-ins and other areas and turning on equipment; working with others to assure food items are prepped for opening; checking in purveyors and checking invoices and shipments against outside order sheet; at end of shift, locking doors, turning off lighting and equipment, and assuring that production area is clean and ready for next day's use.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position requires ability to stoop, twist, bend, reach, and grasp with high frequency; good eye-hand coordination; ability to stand for long periods on hard surfaces that may be slippery when wet; ability to lift up to 50 pounds infrequently and 20 pounds routinely. Position is exposed to frequent temperature extremes while working in hot humid dish room, over heated food service areas, and entering walk-in freezers.
