Contract Types

There are a number of different contract types actively assigned to university employees.  The list below differentiates the contracts from one another providing important information about each:

Officers of Administration

A Contract:  The contract type used for many officers of administration hired before May 18, 2011.
Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year at a time; longer contracts may be granted as rare exceptions.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  This contract carries advance notice of non-renewal of twelve months or until the end of the contract, whichever is longer.  Notice may be given at any time.

H Contract:  The contract type used for officers of administration in non-temporary positions who were either transitioned from an F contract or hired after May 18, 2011.
Length: This contract can be issued for up to one year at a time; longer contracts may be granted as rare exceptions. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  This contract carries advance notice of non-renewal.  During the first year of employment, required notice is a minimum of one month. After the first year of employment, required notice is a minimum of three months.

F Contract:  The contract type used for officers of administration in temporary positions.
Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year.
Timely Notice:  This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.

Officers of Administration – Athletics

AAAD Contract:  The contract type used for athletic administrators hired before May 18, 2011.
LengthContracts are usually one year; longer contracts may be granted as an exception.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice: This contract carries advance notice of nonrenewal of twelve months or until the end of the contract, whichever is longer.  Notice may be given at any time.

HAAD Contract:  The contract type used for athletic administrators in non-temporary positions who were either transitioned from the FAAD contract or hired after May 18, 2011.
Length: This contract can be issued for up to one year; longer contracts may be granted as an exception. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  This contract carries advance notice of nonrenewal.  Notice required is either one month (during the first year), three months (after the first year), or until the end of the current contract, whichever is longer.  Notice must be given by March 31 for contracts ending June 30th.

FAAD Contract:  The contract type used for temporary or interim athletics administrators.
Length: This contract can be issued for up to one year.
Timely Notice:  This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.

FCH Contract:  This contract type is used for intercollegiate athletics coaches.
Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year; longer contracts may be issued as set forth in separate agreements.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.

Non-Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments (Primarily Officers of Instruction)

BUA Contract:  The contract type used for faculty in tenure-related positions who are members of the United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit.
Length:  This contract is issued for a period of three years unless the University and bargaining unit faculty member agree on a shorter duration.  Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §15.
Timely Notice:  If an appointment of a full-time, tenure-track bargaining unit member is not to be renewed for reasons other than for just cause or program elimination or reduction, notice of nonrenewal shall be given as set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §16.  Acting Assistant Professor appointments do not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.   Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

B Contract:  The contract type used for faculty in tenure-related positions who are NOT members of the United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit.
Length:   Contracts for tenure-track faculty can be issued for up to three years at a time.  Faculty members will be issued a contract with no ending date upon receiving tenure.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.   For tenure-track faculty, the internal comments section of RTO should list the reason why a contract in excess of one year is needed.
Timely Notice:  If an appointment of a full-time tenure-track faculty is not to be renewed for reasons other than for cause or financial exigency, advance notice of nonrenewal shall be given in writing as stated in OAR 580-021-0305.

DUA Contract:  The contract type used for the appointment of a United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit faculty member into a non-funding contingent, adjunct appointment.

  • Bargaining unit faculty members in tenure-related positions who are given timely notice should be switched to contract type DUA for their final appointment (Faculty Type D20 and regular position number).
  • This contract type is also used for non-funding contingent adjunct research appointments.

Length:   Duration of appointment is at the discretion of the University.  Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §8.  This contract type is not usually issued for more than one year at a time.
Timely Notice:  This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.   Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

D Contract:   The contract type used to appoint a faculty member who is NOT a member of the United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit into a non-funding contingent, adjunct appointment.

  • Faculty members in tenure-related positions who are given timely notice should be switched to contract type D for their final appointment (Faculty Type D20 and regular position number)
  • This contract type is also used for non-funding contingent adjunct research appointments.

Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year at a time.
Timely Notice:  Adjunct appointments do not carry advance notice of non-renewal.  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 7.

CUA Contract:  The contract type used for the appointment of a United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit faculty member into a non-tenure-track career instructional appointment.
Length:  This contract will be issued for:

  1. At least one year during the first four years of employment in rank,
  2. At least two years after the first four years of employment in rank,
  3. At least three years for faculty members with the rank of Senior I or Senior II. 

Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §3-5.

Timely Notice:  The University is required to provide notice of nonrenewal by May 1st of the last year of the current appointment.  Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

C1 Contract:   The contract type used for non-bargaining unit (United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO), non-tenure-track career instructional appointments in years one through three of an appointment.
Length: Under most circumstances, career NTTF will be offered contracts of at least one years.  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 1970, Page 6. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  During the first three years of appointment, a career NTTF appointment is considered a probationary appointment and will not include a provision of advance notice of nonrenewal. C2 Contract:   The contract type used for non-bargaining unit (United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO), non-tenure-track career instructional appointments in years four through six of an appointment.
Length:   Under most circumstances, career NTTF will be offered contracts of at least one year.  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 6.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  Career NTTF appointments are eligible for advance notice of nonrenewal after three years of service at FTE ≥ .50 (with the exception of those on funding contingent contracts).  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 6.

C3 Contract:   The contract type used for non-bargaining unit (United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO), non-tenure-track career instructional appointments at the level of Senior I or Senior II.
Length:  Under most circumstances, career NTTF will be offered contracts of at least one year.  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 6.  Every effort will be made to provide Senior rank NTTF with longer term contracts. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  Career NTTF appointments are eligible for advance notice of nonrenewal after three years of service at FTE ≥ .50 (with the exception of those on funding contingent contracts).  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 6.

Non-Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments - Librarians

CLUA Contract:  The contract type used for the appointment of a United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit faculty member into a non-tenure-track career librarian appointment.
Length:  This contract can be issued for:  

  1. Two years at a time during the first six years of appointment or until  of employment in rank, or until appointment at the rank of Associate Librarian, whichever is later, and 
  2. Three years at a time at the rank of Associate Librarian and Senior Librarian.

Timely Notice:  The University is required to provide notice of nonrenewal by May 1st of the last year of the current appointment.   Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

CL1 Contract:    The contract type used for non-bargaining unit, non-tenure-track career librarian appointments in years one through three of an appointment.
Length:    This contract can be issued for two years at a time.  Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  During the first three years of appointment, a career NTTF appointment is considered a probationary appointment and will not include a provision of timely notice. CL3 Contract:   The contract type used for non-bargaining unit, non-tenure-track career librarian appointments at the rank of Associate Librarian and Senior Librarian.
Length:    This contract can be issued for three years at a time. Any appointment in excess of one year requires the written approval of the President and any appointment in excess of three years also requires the written approval of the Chancellor.
Timely Notice:  Career NTTF appointments are eligible for timely notice after three years of service at FTE ≥ .50 (with the exception of those on funding contingent contracts). Funding Contingent Faculty Appointments (Primarily Officers of Research)

EUA Contract:  The contract type used for the appointment of a United Academics, AAUP/AFT, AFL-CIO bargaining unit faculty member into an adjunct or a postdoctoral scholar appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding.    

  • EUA contracts are used primarily for researchers but may also be used for the rare funding contingent officer of instruction appointment for a bargaining unit member.

Length: Duration of appointment is at the discretion of the University.  Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §8. This contract type is not usually issued for more than one year at a time.
Timely Notice:   This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.  Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

E Contract:     The contract type used to appoint a faculty member who is NOT a member of the bargaining unit into an adjunct appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding. 

  • E contracts are used primarily for researchers but may also be used for the rare funding contingent officer of administration or non-bargaining unit member officer of instruction appointment.

Length: This contract can be issued for up to one year at a time
Timely Notice:   Adjunct appointments do not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.  Non-Tenure Track Faculty (NTTF) at the University of Oregon Document on Policies, Procedures, and Practices, November 12, 2007, Page 7.

C4UA Contract:  The contract type used for the appointment of a bargaining unit faculty member into a career non-tenure-track appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding. 
Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year.
Timely Notice:  The University will provide notice of renewal, nonrenewal, or termination for lack of funding as soon as practicable.   Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 16, §9.

C4 Contract:   The contract type used to appoint faculty members of all levels who are NOT members of the bargaining unit into a career non-tenure-track appointment for which external funds (i.e. grants, gifts, income) provide the main source of funding.
Length:  This contract can be issued for up to one year.
Timely Notice:  This contract does not carry advance notice of nonrenewal.
