BOLI Law

• The State of Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) has established laws that define requirements for employers to provide meal periods and rest breaks for non-exempt employees. These laws cover hourly, temporary and student employees of the University of Oregon. The collective bargaining agreements with SEIU and GCIU establish the length of breaks and other rules covering classified employees at UO; however, BOLI rules clarify the timing of meal periods and breaks. BOLI has provided information on their Technical Assistance for Employers web page, including a clear description of these laws, a Q & A section, and a chart that shows the required number of breaks and meal periods for various periods of work.
